Ed Zuzelo, Founder, Cardinal Saws & Blades
A Bona Fide Industry Trailblazer

How many of us remember much from 1950? It was the year the US defeated England in the World Cup; comic strip Peanuts debuted; the first TV remote was marketed. And most notably in our industry, Ed Zuzelo founded Cardinal Engineering Corporation.

Few men in the concrete industry go back further than Ed. As the company’s CEO, Ed arrives to work and immerses himself in the daily operations of the business.

He is the embodiment of a classic success story. Leaving home in 1941, Ed enrolled at the Drexel Institute of Technology. Reflective of a work ethic he has retained through the years, he earned his way through college working odd jobs. While working as a machinist in 1944, a year before he earned his mechanical engineering degree, Ed received his first patent for the design of a saw for cutting masonry and concrete.

By the mid-50’s Cardinal was the only company manufacturing both saws and blades. At this time, Ed’s burgeoning company was awarded a contract that involved sawing over 2 million linear feet of joints in green concrete on the West Virginia Turnpike. It was the largest green concrete project of its day. Early in Ed’s career, he had proven himself a true pioneer and innovator in his industry.

Since those early beginnings, Ed has acquired over 50 patents in the field of abrasive sawing. More recent patents include the truly universal arbor capable of being mounted on any concrete saw (2002). Today, he takes great pride in Cardinal Saws & Blades’ history and his ability to produce blades that offer the lowest cost per unit of sawing.

By the way, if you’d like to talk to Ed, a good bet is to call Cardinal after regular business hours. Most likely he’ll be there to pick up the phone. Old work habits die hard.
